Have you noticed that there’s kind of a strange sexism when it comes to flowers? While no one would bat an eyelid at a man admiring a beautiful garden, exclaiming over the scent of a rose, or putting all of his free time into the cultivation of an allotment of dahlias, society all but quails at the idea of gifting a man a bouquet of flowers.
Floral bouquets are feminine. And come Mother’s Day, they’re the go-to gift. In fact, in America, it’s believed that approximately US$2.66 billion was spent on Mother’s Day flowers this year. And that’s really lovely. But why shouldn’t dads get a look in too? Sure, socks, chocs, and jocks are fine. But a beautiful bouquet could mean so much more.
Four Reasons Why Flowers are Perfect for Father’s Day

Flowers are beautiful
This is kind of an obvious one, but flowers are really lovely to look at. And men like lovely things too. If you know of a flower that your dad particularly enjoys, there is no reason why he wouldn’t appreciate a hand-tied arrangement of them for Father’s Day.
Flowers are proven to make us happy
We’ve mentioned this before, but flowers are nature’s little happy factories. When we see flowers, our brains are triggered to produce dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. The three chemicals we need to make us happy. There is endless evidence to support this, but the only evidence you really need is a flower and your own eyes. And we can’t think of any better gift than happiness to give to anyone. Especially our dads.
Flowers can be meaningful
Quite apart from floriography and the language of flowers, most of us have flowers that mean something special to us. And that can be a really lovely thing to evoke when selecting any gift for anyone. Because the thing about gifts, especially from children to parents, is that it really is the thought that counts. So, if your dad showed you how to grow giant sunflowers when you were kid, or has fond memories of growing them with his father, a gift of cut sunflowers (or a tray of seedlings, if you prefer!) can be a really lovely way to say, ‘thank you’.
Flowers are unexpected
This shouldn’t really be the case. But because in Western culture it’s unusual for men to receive flowers, a gorgeous bouquet – or even a simple posy – can make the most wonderful gift. It has the element of surprise. And it’s so much more interesting than yet another tie, or craft beer selection.
What Type of Flower Should You Give Your Dad for Father’s Day?

Anything at all that you think he’ll like!
That’s really the only rule when it comes to giving anyone flowers. Select something he’ll love. Be that an arrangement of his favourite blooms. Or a bouquet featuring his favourite colours. If he enjoys fragrance, select perfumed flowers, like freesias. If not, unscented flowers, like gerbera, can be a good idea.
What really matters when selecting flowers for Father’s Day is that you show that you’ve put in some thought.
Male, female, young, or old. At blue Florist, we believe that flowers are for everyone. So, what do you think? Are you ready to select your Father’s Day arrangement?
