Why We Love Peonies

The month of May is amazing for all kinds of reasons. But for us, the very best thing about it is that it signals the start of peony season. Peonies usually only bloom through May and June. But oh, what a spectacle when they do! One of the biggest and blousiest of flowers, peonies simply make your heart soar. And when they’re available, we always make sure to use them in our arrangements. But what actually is it about the peony that we love so much?

Five Reasons Why the Peony is One of Our Very Favourite Flowers

They are absolutely stunning

Really, have you ever seen a peony? You don’t need us to explain this, but peonies are complete showstoppers. They are big and bold, yet carry a graceful elegance that few blooms can surpass. We have never seen a peony that we didn’t like. And that’s what makes them such an incredible flower for both floristry and the garden.

The peony’s scent is sublime

Like the rose, the peony is a plant that does it all. Easy grower. Perennial bloomer. Incredible flowers. And the most incredible perfume. And that perfume varies from species to species. Some are redolent of citrus, others are sweet, and some varieties have a hint of rose. But all are fresh and uplifting, and can fill a room without being overpowering.

There are many different types of peony

There are nine distinct peony flower forms. From the gorgeous open singles, right up to the hydrangea globular and ‘thousand petal crown’. Providing a flower type to suit all styles. While we love the singles, with their wide open petals which make them so perfect for pollinators, the doubles look spectacular in any floral arrangement.

Peonies come in a wide range of colours

While the most popular peonies tend to be red, white, and pink, you can actually get peony flowers in a wide range of colours. Apricot, purple, yellow, green, and mixed striated blooms. The only colours you’ll not find in peonies are true blue and black. But some of the reds and purples are so dark that they’re getting there.

Their meaning

Like most other flowers, the symbolism of the peony changes with its colour. But overall, the meaning of the flower is positive. Depending on the culture, the peony is known to represent love, prosperity, honour, happiness, romance, beauty, and good fortune. This makes peonies suitable for pretty much every occasion.

Peonies have a relatively short vase life/ When cut, they rarely last beyond five days, and no more than 10 when left on the plant. They’re also only available for a short period of time each year. But we can forgive them for that for everything else that they bring. Beauty, scent, variety, and limitless charm. So, hoorah for May, and the blooming of the peony!
