The Best Flowers for Making a Christmas Wreath

The countdown is officially on. The shopping is underway, and no one is going to judge you for putting up your decorations. That means that it’s time to start thinking about your wreath. You might have an old faithful that comes out year after year. But if you’re looking for a truly unique touch to bring some seasonal cheer to your front door, you may be considering making your own. And if you are, then fresh foliage and flowers take some beating. So, what are the best festive blooms to brighten your doorway this winter?

Our Top 7 Favourite Flowers and Foliage for Making a Christmas Wreath

Willow

OK, so we’re not really talking about flowers or foliage here, but if you’re looking for a natural frame to build your wreath around, you have to consider willow. Perfectly pliable, you can simply cut some thin branches and weave them into a loop. And that’s your frame done! The only drawback with willow is that it doesn’t provide any form of water retention, so you’ll need to work some florists foam, or other form of water supply into the design as you go. If not, consider using dried flowers, holly, and pinecones.

Fir

For a truly zhuzhy wreath, you need plenty of foliage, and you have a lot of options to choose from. Pine can be nice, giving that Christmas tree effect. But it’s sometimes hard to work with. Fir is softer on the hands, and fuller on the frame, creating a lush background for your flowers to adorn.

Chrysanthemums

One of the reasons that florists like chrysanthemums is that they last longer than almost any cut flower. Another is that they are available in such a wide variety of colours and sizes. For Christmas, the white and the red tend to stand out from the crowd. But there are no rules saying that you have to adhere to a festive colour scheme. Sometimes, the louder and prouder combinations work best of all.

Roses

Not all roses last long once cut, but we do love a brilliant red rose in our festive wreaths. Beautiful, elegant, and sweetly scented, the rose needs no real introduction. The only drawback is if you are planning on making your wreath sooner rather than later, you may need to refresh your roses before the big day. Rose hips can make a wonderful wreath addition too, if you’re going for a more rustic look. And you can find them for free, if you enjoy a winter stroll. Just remember to leave some for the birds.

Eryngium

Better known as sea holly, eryngium brings both a striking architectural form and a gorgeous blue colour that can be hard to find in flowers to your Christmas wreath. When fresh, they can last around 10 days. When dried, they will look stunning for years. Making this a really versatile bloom for your Christmas decorations.

Protea

If you want a flower with real wow factor, then the king protea delivers in spades. Lasting around 14 days, these big blousy blooms bring an exotic flavour to your festive finery. And with these front and centre, you’ll probably need no other adornment on your background of green.

Crab apples

Looking for some natural baubles? They don’t get much sweeter than crab apples! Making a lovely alternative to holly berries, they are available in yellow, green, and the brightest red, and you can find them for free while out walking. Like all apples, they last for ages. And if positioned well, they can bring a real decorative element to your Christmas wreath.

Wreaths are one of the loveliest signs of Christmas, transforming front doors into places of welcome instead of shutting out the world. You can make them from sticks, superglue, and old decorations. Forage for pinecones, rosehips, acorn cups, and holly. Grab a bag of dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Or you can whip up a floral wonder using a Christmas flower arrangement for inspiration. Whatever option you go for, we’re sure that it will be wonderful!
