Receiving flowers for your birthday is the best. But it’s even better when you realise that the sender has taken the time to do something extra special. And selected an arrangement that contains your birth flower.
Just as every month has a birth stone associated with it, it also has a birth flower. Often two! No one can really agree upon when this custom was established. Some say it dates back to the early Romans. Others, that it comes down to the Victorians and the language of flowers that they made so popular. But regardless of its origin, birth flowers are very much a thing. And selecting a floral arrangement that reflects the recipient’s month of birth makes a really beautiful birthday gift.
So, do you now the birth flowers of the important people in your life?
Birth Flowers by Month
January

With its array of colours and sumptuous scent, the carnation is the birth flower for all those born in January. Symbolising love, loyalty, devotion, fascination, and luck, depending on their colour, these lovely blooms are long-lasting once cut. Making them a lasting favourite amongst florists.
February

The primary birth flower of February is the violet. Beautifully delicate, with heart-shaped petals, these lovely flowers are often associated with romance, loyalty, and virtue. Apparently, St. Valentine used them to make ink to write his letters! Sadly, due to their short stems and delicate form, you won’t find violets in any bouquets. But you can buy them as pot plants, or in planted spring flower baskets, along with primroses – which are the second birth flower of February.
March

Tall, bold, and bright, or small and delicate, there could be no other birth flower for March than the daffodil. The daffodil, or narcissus as it’s also known, is a flower of two faces. It has a reputation for conceit (narcissism). But is also a tremendously happy flower. The national flower of Wales, and one of the most prominent flowers of spring, they symbolise rebirth. And a bunch of birthday daffs can’t help but put a smile on anyone’s face.
April

The happy daisy is the birth flower of April. And with 23,000 species available, you’ve got a lot to choose from when it comes to selecting the perfect birthday gift. From chrysanthemums to gerberas. Representing purity, innocence, and faithful love, there’s a daisy to bring a smile to every face. If you’re looking for an alternative, sweet peas are also sometimes used to celebrate April babies.

Most familiar as a wedding flower, lily of the valley is the birth flower of anyone born in May. Representing the return of happiness, humility, and purity, the elegant bell-like blooms of the lily of the valley only last for a few days once cut. But goodness, they make an impression while they last!
June

Ah June, the month of the rose! Who doesn’t like roses? Available in so very many colours and forms, from the great big cabbage-headed varieties to the open five-petal beauties beloved of bees. With their heady scent and beautiful form, there is a rose for everyone. The flower of love and beauty, roses need no introduction. And what a flower to celebrate a birthday with!
