Top 7 Autumn Flowers to Brighten Your Home

We’re still having a few bright, warm days, but there’s no escaping the fact that summer is over. The nights are longer, the air is crisper, and the trees are beginning to turn. For most of us, that means it’s time to cosy down. Out come the jeans and jumpers, and in comes a whole new colour palette. It’s time to welcome in the oranges, reds, and the rest of the warmer end of the spectrum, if you want to give your home that cosy autumnal feel. So, when you’re choosing autumn flowers?

Our Favourite Autumn Flowers

Dahlias

Dahlias are among the stars of autumn. Blooming until the first frosts, they can bring any September or October garden to life with their incredible range of colours. From fiery oranges and reds to soft blush and café au lait. They are bold and beautiful, and add height and colour to any arrangement, regardless of the type of dahlia you choose.

Chrysanthemums

There are so many reasons to love chrysanthemums. They come in a range of sizes, heights, and colours. They are one of the longest-lasting flowers when cut and placed in a vase. And they add not only colour but texture to arrangements, with their dense, fluffy blooms. While ‘mums come in all kinds of shades, we generally choose golden yellows, burnt oranges, or deep reds to capture that autumnal vibe.

Roses

Of course, roses aren’t just for autumn. They’re a perennial symbol of romance, and different species are available all year-round.  But for autumn, we really loved roses with beautiful, muted tones. Look for dusky pinks, faded paper, burgundy, and peach-coloured roses for a romantic, vintage-style bouquet that suits the season perfectly.

Sunflowers

While we most associate sunflowers with summer, there are still plenty of late-season varieties available. And with their large, golden heads, they can’t help but bring a splash of colour and a smile to your home. They also look stunning when paired with deep red, orange, and brown accents.

Gaillardia

Gaillardia is a show-stopping late-season bloomer that thrives well into autumn. Available in mainly reds, oranges, and yellows, with a bold central eye, it brings a sunburst of colour to any bouquet. And like every other daisy-shaped flower, it can’t help but make you feel happy.

Hypericum berries

OK, so they’re not a flower, but hypericum berries can make a really gorgeous addition to any autumn flower arrangement. Their glossy red, green, or bronze-toned berries add contrast, structure, and seasonal interest. So, we love using them.

Grasses

Grasses will never be the focus of any flower arrangement, but they’re often the unsung heroes.  With soft plumes, feathery textures, and earthy tones, they add movement and structure, giving bouquets a natural, effortless feel. We use a whole range of different grasses at Blue Florist, but some of our favourites at this time of year include pampas grass, miscanthus, briza, and lagurus   (bunny tails). They all bring elegance and interest to hand-tied arrangements.

They may signal the descent into winter, but autumn flowers are invariably charming. They bring a splash of brightness and colour on gloomy days and the longer, darker nights. And really, that’s when they’re needed most. So, whether you’re looking for a gift or simply for a pick-me-up to add some cheer to your own home, give some autumn flowers a chance. We’re pretty sure you won’t regret it!
