Our Five Favourite Green Flowers

Green flowers are frequently overlooked. For many, they can seem pointless – why choose a green flower when green leaves are so easy to come by? But when looked at properly, green flowers can be absolutely beautiful, And when used as part of a larger arrangement, like the Spring Hand-tied Extra Large, they add depth, interest, and vibrancy. So, today, we thought we’d talk you through our five favourite green flowers for cutting.

Five Green Flowers Perfect for Cutting

Gladioli

Gladioli make fabulous cut flowers, whatever the colour. Tall and elegant, with multiple blooms, they make a striking statement. And, when cut, they will last a good two weeks in clean water. Longer, if you strip off each flower as it fades. And there are several different shades of green gladioli available. From the most vibrant ‘Evergreen’ to ‘Moonlight Shadow’ which has a mellow green heart surrounded by the softest lilac trim. Simple floral perfection.

Hydrangea

The green hydrangea ‘Little Lime’ is one of our favourites for floral arrangements. They only usually last around 8-10 days when cut, but they add so much interest and value that we can forgive them their relatively short display time. These frothy, foamy flower heads bring both volume and detail to a bouquet, with each stem boasting dozens and dozens of little flowers. And if you’re looking for larger green flowers, then hydrangea ‘Limelight’, ‘Lime Rickey’, and ‘Sunshine Amy’ can all deliver.

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums are another plant that can deliver a riot of green blooms. While we typically favour the smaller, spray chrysanthemums, such as ‘Code Green’, you can find green ‘mums as big as your fist. Possibly even bigger! Like all chrysanthemums, these gorgeous greens last an age when cut, giving you real bang for your floral buck.

Echinacea

With their big, daisy-like blooms, echinacea are crowd-stoppers in all their many colours and forms. But the green blooms are something special. ‘Green Jewel’ is impossibly vibrant, standing proud in its limey splendour. But for those looking for a flower with a little more colour to offer, you have the stunning ‘Green Twister’ with its pink heart and elegant green tips.

Bells of Ireland

Not dissimilar to a delphinium in form, bells of Ireland are probably the best-known green flowers. Growing up to 75cm in height, they are statuesque and stately, perfectly capable of filling a vase alone. They can last for weeks when cut. And what many people don’t realise is that these amazing flowers dry beautifully, allowing you to keep them in your home for longer.

Green flowers are rarely considered the star of the show. But as we move into spring, they carry a lushness and vibrancy that can lift the spirits – as well as your floral arrangements. And we think that they are amazing.

When you order a Blue Florist one-of-a-kind flower arrangement, you can ask us to work on a theme. So, why not get in touch and request an arrangement full of glorious greens? They’re not always available, which makes them even more special when they are!
