Flaming June has really lived up to its name so far this year. Apart from the occasional ground-quenching storm, it’s been hot and sultry for the entirety of the month. And our gardens are looking all the better for it. The brightest flowers are all coming into bloom – if they’re not there already. And foliage is looking at its most lush and lovely. Sunflowers

Nothing speaks of summer quite like the sunflower. While most of us think of dark centres surrounded by a mass of bright yellow petals when the sunflower comes to mind, they are actually available in a range of hues. Some, like the teddy bear sunflower, are yellow all over. Others are a soft, almost white, or such a dark red that they can look virtually black. And it’s this range of shades that makes sunflowers so useful to florists. Once cut, they can last as much as two weeks. But being annuals, once they’re gone, they’re gone. So, make the most of these seasonal specials while you can.

Dahlias

Available in an enormous array of colours, sizes, and forms, dahlias are one of summer’s floral bombshells. They can be bold and bright or soft and elegant. As big as dinner plate or as small as a cat’s paw. Blooming throughout mid and late summer, dahlias are a border essential. But they also make the most wonderful cut flower, with a vase life of around a week.    

Zinnias

No other flower delivers such a spectacular colour pop as the zinnia. Part of the daisy family, they possess all the familiar multi-petal characteristics of the family. And yet they simply zing! They can last up to 12 days when cut, and they’re unscented. So, if you are sensitive to perfumes, they make a really great choice for your summer arrangements.

Gladiolus

Gladioli haven’t always been associated with high floral fashion… thanks in part to the inimitable Dame Edna Everage. But whether worked into a wider floral arrangement or used alone in a simple glass vase, these beautiful flowers carry enormous stature. Available in more colours than you may be aware of, they also possess a deliciously light perfume, which they only emit in the evenings.  Giving you one more reason to add them to your indoor flower displays.

Lilies

If you are not a pet owner, lilies are another outstanding summer cut flower choice. Bringing height, elegance, and one of the most recognisable flower scents, lilies really know how to put on a floral show. They last an average of two weeks in a vase. And you can choose from a good selection of tones in the white, pink, yellow, and orange spectrum.
