Our Five Favourite Flowers for Autumn

With the weather being so mild, autumn has felt like a long-time coming this year. But with the mists creeping in and the leaves beginning to turn, in mid-November we’re just about there. So, being one cold snap away from bare branches, we thought we’d take a few minutes to appreciate our favourite autumn blooms. And there are still some real beauties to be found.

Five Favourite Autumn Flowers

Chrysanthemums

We’ve spoken before about the wonder of chrysanthemums. They’re the birth flower of November babies. They’re symbolic of good luck and friendship. And they come in such a wide variety of shapes and colours that it’s almost impossible to not find at least one chrysanthemum that you love. And for florists, they make the perfect cut flower because they simply keep on blooming.

Dahlias

You either love or you hate dahlias. And a few years ago, they were very out of fashion. But they’ve started to creep back in recent years, and there are so many different forms of dahlia that we simply love them. As long as there’s no hard frost to kill them, dahlias can bloom from early summer, right through to December, which makes them a great option for seasonal displays.

Kniphofia

You won’t often find these in a cut floral display, but kniphofia is undoubtedly the star of the autumn garden. Also known as ‘red hot pokers’, they are known for their striking upright blooms of orange, yellow, and red. And if you grow them at home, they make excellent cut flowers because the more flower spikes you cut, the more the plant will produce.

Asters

Like their cousin, the chrysanthemum, asters are sparkling stars of the autumn show. Blooming non-stop from the end of summer until the first frost, these beautiful little flowers are great for later pollinators when in the garden. And make a wonderful display when cut. They can be presented en masse in a vase. Or can be used to accent more varied displays.

Roses

There is a rose for every season. And whether you’re looking for a garden display, or cut flowers for the home, the rose won’t disappoint. As we move towards winter, it’s the white roses that appeal the most, bringing delicate scent, and soft, near-iridescent blooms. But there’s always a place for the fiery red rose on any autumnal or Christmas sideboard. And the pinks, peaches, and yellows carry messages of their own. They are perfection in every form.

As the weather closes in and the year comes to an end, there is still plenty of colour to be found in the world of flowers. You just need to know where to look for it.
