How to Choose Anniversary Flowers

Choosing anniversary flowers feels like it should be easy. Dozen red roses? Job done! But while roses are undeniably beautiful, they’re not the only flower for special occasions. And sometimes it’s nice to show that little bit of extra thought, and find a floral arrangement that is truly special.

Five Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wedding Anniversary Flowers

Look to your wedding for inspiration

OK, so you had a lot on, on the day that you were married. You can’t be expected to remember everything. But, if the flowers have managed to lodge themselves in your head, then ordering a bespoke flower gift box built around one or two of your wedding day favourites can be an inspired choice. It’ll not only give you significant Brownie points for attention to detail, but it will bring back some beautiful memories for both of you.

Anniversary flowers

Did you know that every anniversary has its own special flower? So, just as paper denotes your first anniversary, it is also the anniversary of carnations. The second is cosmos (beautiful, but not awfully practical unless you grow your own in the summer). The third is the sunflower. And so it goes. Right on up to lilies for the 30th, and yellow roses for the 50th wedding anniversary. So, if you’re looking for a fresh idea that holds some significance, do a little research and find your anniversary flower.

Celebrate their name

As well as the obvious species names, most flowers have an individual name. And many of them are just perfect for gifting. Roses alone, have hundreds of different Christian names. Amanda and Arthur, Benjamin and Beryl, Chris, Charlotte, and the Bloom of Ruth! You might be one of the unlucky ones and find that your other half doesn’t share their name with a beautiful bloom. But, on the other hand, they might. And even if you can’t find it in your local florist (and it’s always worth asking), you can always order a plant for the garden. The ultimate gift that just keeps giving.

Show that you listen

It doesn’t matter if you select their favourite flower, favourite colour, or find a plant that they commented on at the garden centre last Sunday. Selecting any floral arrangement that shows that you do actually pay attention can make a wonderful – not to mention surprising! – anniversary gift.

Understand the meaning of flowers

The Victorian ‘language of flowers’ may no longer be ‘spoken’, but it can still provide wonderful inspiration for special occasions. So, while red flowers are popular amongst couples, symbolising passion, pink flowers represent joy, grace, femininity, and trust. Red roses, dahlias, tulips, and carnations all indicate love. While lavender stands for devotion, and yellow roses friendship – a strong foundation for any marriage.

Your anniversary is special. It’s a reminder of what matters when life can so easily get in the way on a day-to-day basis. Choosing the right flowers isn’t integral. But it can be a wonderful way to show how much you really care.
