How to Care for Cut Roses

The rose is the UK’s most-loved flower. It comes in a wide range of colours and sizes. It is the bloom of choice for bouquets. And it is the most-given floral gift for almost every occasion. In a vase, roses will typically last around one week. But if properly cared for, they can last longer. So, how can you get the best from your cut roses?

How to Make Cut Roses Last as Long as Possible

Trim the stems

When cut, the stems of flowers form a dry crust over the wound, in an attempt to preserve water. What this means is that when you take them home and put them in a vase, the stem’s ability to take in water is dramatically reduced. And if the flower can’t access water, it will wilt far more quickly. So, whenever you receive roses, your first move should always be to trim the stems.

Even in water, over time the base of rose stems will deteriorate. So, it’s a good idea to cut them again every few days. This can preserve their life for up to an extra week.

Remove low leaves

While trimming your rose stems, it’s a good idea to remove any leaves that may potentially sit below the water line of your vase. If leaves are left in water, they will rot. And this will corrupt the water being taken up by your roses. Roses need fresh, clean water. In dirty water, they simply won’t last.

Remove guard petals

All roses have guard petals. They’re the first petals formed by each bloom. And their role is to protect the flower within. They are very strong, but they are also the first to fade. If you carefully remove them, the petals within will unfold and continue to look beautiful for longer.

Keep your water fresh

As already mentioned, roses need fresh water to look their best. By refreshing your water on a regular basis – every one or two days – and feeding them, you will help your roses to last an awful lot longer.

Roses are loved for a reason. They are beautiful. And their scent can be delightful. But if you don’t look after them well, the joy they can hold will be wasted. So, take a few minutes to think about how to care for your roses. You’ll be rewarded for your effort.
