Common Flower Ordering Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Ordering flowers should be an enjoyable experience. Whether you're celebrating, saying sorry, or just making someone’s day, it’s a nice thing to do. Even if you’re just treating yourself. But even the best intentions can go wrong. And there are some mistakes that we see time and time again. So, how can you avoid the most common flower-ordering pitfalls?

Top 5 Mistakes People Make When Ordering Flowers

Waiting until the last minute

At Blue Florist, we offer same day delivery for orders placed before 3pm. But a lot of florists don’t. If you forget about an anniversary or birthday until the night before, you can be left scrambling to order. This can mean that your options are limited. So, unless same-day delivery is available, it’s best not to take your chances.

How to avoid it:

Plan ahead! For major events, such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or Christmas, order at least 3–5 days in advance. Not only does this guarantee delivery. You’ll also get the best selection of flowers.

Not giving enough information

It’s easily done. But if you place an order online or by phone and forget to include important details, you can end up with confusion. Misdirected orders. Misnamed orders. Mystery order with no sender. That’s why we have a comprehensive booking form on the Blue Florist website. But not all companies do.

How to avoid it:

Double-check all of your information before you submit your order. Include:

  • Recipient’s full name
  • Full address (including any flat numbers)
  • Working phone number (in case of delivery issues)
  • A clear, personal card message
  • Special instructions (such as gate codes or preferred delivery times)

Choosing out of season flowers

This isn’t as much of a big deal as it used to be. Many flowers are now available year-round. However, if you order daffodils in September or sunflowers in January, you may be disappointed. And if they are somehow sourced, you’re likely to face delays and higher prices.

How to avoid it:

Ask your florist what’s in season. Seasonal flowers tend to look fresher and last longer. They’re also usually more affordable. This can be hard if you have a specific look in mind. But your florist will usually be able to recommend seasonal alternatives that can create a similar look.

Choosing based on price

We get it. Money is tight right now. Flowers are a luxury that many of us simply can’t afford. So, when we’re looking for a gift, it can be really tempting to select the cheapest option without considering size, quality, or the recipient’s taste. It can often lead to a sense of wasted cash when your gift doesn’t quite have the impact you were hoping for.

How to avoid it:

Think about value, not just price. Spending a little more can often mean a dramatically better bouquet. If you're unsure, ask your florist what’s most popular in your price range. They can guide you to the best option for your budget.

Forgetting the card message

Flowers can be a beautiful and deeply personal gift. So, why waste the opportunity by sending a generic message. Or not sending a message at all? It makes the whole thing seem impersonal.

How to avoid it:

You don’t have to write an essay. But a few well-thought words can transform the occasion. So, personalise your gift. Use the recipient’s name. Choose a favourite quote. Or reference an inside joke. It doesn’t have to be poetic. It just needs to mean something.

Your local florist is there to help you make those special occasions memorable. They can help you find flowers with meaning. And to create bouquets that will never be forgotten. If you're unsure what to choose or how to say it, just ask. We’re here to help you make memories.
