Just like everything else, flowers come in and out of fashion. A decade ago, dahlias were outdated. Now, they’re de rigueur. Everything changes. And everything flows. So, while we’ve seen a recent yen for more muted shades in floral arrangements, with pastels and whites dominating the scene, we have a new pretender to the floral fashion crown. Barbiecore.
Here’s what you need to know.
Why Barbiecore Blooms are Big for 2023

What is Barbiecore?
As the name suggests, Barbiecore refers to any style that references the world of Barbie. It’s bright. It’s brash. And it’s bold. It’s bubble-gum and hot pink. And it’s in everywhere. From high fashion to housewares. And this spring and summer, it is coming to your local florist!
How to choose Barbiecore blooms
Barbiecore begins with colour. And while pink is the primary shade, it’s not the only choice. If you are looking for flowers that keep up with the Barbie trend, your guide should be vibrancy. Hot pink. Orange. Cerise. Acid yellow. Bright purple. Shades that you wouldn’t necessarily put together in other circumstances, but give a massive hit of vitality and joie de vivre. While you’re not looking for colours that clash, it doesn’t really matter if they do!
What flowers work best for the Barbiecore aesthetic?
When you think of Barbie, you often think big and blousy. But she has lots of little accessories too. So, as with any other good flower arrangement, for Barbiecore, it makes sense to contrast shapes and sizes as well as colours.
Roses
Whether pink or orange, roses are one of the most feminine looking flowers around. They’re beautiful. They come in a range of sizes. And they can smell exquisite.
Dahlias
If you’re looking for a flower that comes in a symphony of colours, the dahlia has to be at the top of the list. And they have an incredible array of forms. From the simple, open ‘singles’ to the enormous ‘ball’ and ‘cactus’ flowers. Sadly, their vase life is limited. But they will shine while they last.
Chrysanthemum
Whether you select the great big reflex style blooms, or the tiny Santini spray flowers, chrysanthemums not only look amazing, but last for weeks on end. And they come in a whole rainbow of vivacious colours.
Gerbra
With its bright, open, happy face, there is no other flower that shouts, ‘come on Barbie, let’s go party!’ quite like the gerbera or germini. Especially when you opt for the hottest of hot pink tones.
Lilies
Lilies are about as big and blousy as you can get. In pink, orange, and yellow they have the perfect Barbiecore aesthetic. And their scent can be divine. But one of the reasons why we like them so much is that as well as looking wonderful in a bouquet, they can also make a massive impact when placed in a vase alone. When cut, they can also last for up to two weeks.
How do you complete the Barbiecore look?
Staging can be everything. And if you really want to hit the big Barbiecore style, you need to invest into some pink vases! We’d probably opt for glass, just so you don’t dominate the blooms. But almost anything goes with Barbiecore!
Bold, bright, and fun, Barbiecore is the perfect look for the summer of 2023. But remember – flowers don’t have to be about fashion. So, if Barbicore is all a bit too brash for your tastes, go for the flowers that hold your happy.
